SHORT ISSUE THIS WEEK - ILL
Back in full next week, but here’s what caught my eye this week.
Amazon’s week stretched across enforcement scrutiny, strategic infrastructure commitments and continued consolidation of AI across internal systems. Italian authorities raided two Amazon sites under a probe linked to China-based smuggling networks, adding another layer to Amazon’s expanding regulatory exposure. At the infrastructure level, satellite internet previews began for business customers through Project Kuiper, while Amazon's global data centre count passed 900, reflecting the scale required to support growing AI workloads. Internal guidance now prioritises Amazon’s own AI coding model Kiro over external tools, part of a broader strategy to consolidate dependency. At the same time, Amazon announced up to $50 billion in investment to build AI infrastructure for US government agencies.
Tension continues to build around Amazon’s closed-loop ambitions. A threat analysis outlined how Amazon is using autonomy to reduce exposure to labour markets and third-party systems, reinforcing its internal control stack. Amazon’s satellite and cloud infrastructure, particularly through Kuiper, is increasingly positioned as geopolitical critical infrastructure, not merely commercial tech. Amazon is no longer scaling service lines. It is building a stack others must work within—whether they are customers, sellers, or governments.
